Your First Week Abroad: A Practical Checklist

SIM card, bank account, transport card and enrolment — what to sort out in your first seven days.

Day one: arrive and rest

Keep your documents in your hand luggage, confirm your pickup or transport, and let your family know you have arrived safely.

Get connected

Buy a local SIM card, set up a bank account and get a transport card. Your university's international office can help with all three.

Start early, keep every document consistent, and ask questions before you submit — not after.

Attend orientation week

Orientation is where you learn about classes, support services and student clubs. Do not skip it.

  • Keep scanned copies of every document in one folder
  • Check that your name is spelled the same everywhere
  • Write down deadlines in one calendar

Find your community

Join the Nepali student association at your university. Seniors are a great source of advice on housing, part-time work rules and study tips.
