Both tests are widely accepted. Here is how to decide based on your destination, skills and timeline.
Check what your university accepts
Start with the course page. Most universities in Australia, the UK and New Zealand accept both tests, but some programmes and visa categories have specific requirements.
How the two tests feel different
IELTS includes a face-to-face speaking test with an examiner, while PTE is fully computer-based and scored by software. Some students prefer one style over the other.
Start early, keep every document consistent, and ask questions before you submit — not after.
Timeline and results
Both tests are available regularly in Kathmandu. Plan your test date so results arrive before your application deadline, with time for a retake if needed.
- Keep scanned copies of every document in one folder
- Check that your name is spelled the same everywhere
- Write down deadlines in one calendar
Our recommendation
Take a practice test in each format, then decide. Your counselor can review your scores against the requirements of the courses on your shortlist.
